Senior Spotlight: Sanford Meridian’s Plichta Heads to Oakland

MISportsNow is putting the spotlight on northern Michigan high school senior student-athletes who had their seasons cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sanford Meridian senior Trey Plichta recently concluded an impressive prep career that saw him compete in four sports for the Mustangs.

A member of Sanford Meridian’s cross country, basketball, baseball and track and field programs, Plichta earned all-state honors on the hardwood and is a two-time qualifier for the MHSAA Lower Peninsula cross country finals.

Plichta is set to continue his academic and athletic careers at Oakland University in the fall.

“I visited a bunch of schools, and it was just more I felt like I belonged,” Plichta said. “I visited there and did an overnight visit with the team. I love the guys. I love the coach. Super nice facilities. Academically, it’s a great school. They had what I wanted — industrial engineering, and my dad went there which helps.”
