Gaylord Alum LaJoie Reflects on NCAA Wrestling Championships Cancellation

One of the many northern Michigan collegiate student-athletes impacted by the NCAA’s decision last week to cancel winter and spring sport championships amid the coronavirus pandemic is Gaylord High School alum and current Cornell wrestler Dom LaJoie.

LaJoie recently completed his second year on the collegiate mat and secured his first bid to the NCAA Wrestling Championships back on Friday, March 6.

As one of the most decorated area wrestlers in recent years, LaJoie concluded his prep career in 2017 as a three-time individual state champion and MHSAA state record holder for career (94) and season (43) technical falls and career (236) two-point near falls.

“Pretty much all our guys got together in one house and just kind of glum, sad, just hanging around. I don’t know,” LaJoie said. “The only thing to do I guess is just work towards next year. Getting better for that. Setting new goals. Now I’m on the bulk phase. I’m eating, getting stronger. Getting ready for next year, I guess.”

LaJoie was one of eight Big Red wrestlers to make the 2020 NCAA Wrestling Championships field, that was set to take place March 19-21. Cornell was seeking its 13th straight top-10 team finish at the national championships.
