Saxton’s Goal Lifts Soo Eagles

SAULT STE. MARIE – Jake Saxton’s goal with 56 seconds remaining in regulation lifted the Soo Eagles to a 4-3 win over the Espanola Express on Wednesday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play.

Trailing 2-1 after the second period, the Eagles (16-17-2) took a 3-2 lead midway through the third on goals from Chris Lutz and Nate Harris.

Espanola’s Martin Lavigne would answer the Soo with under three minutes remaining to tie the game at 3-3.

Brendan Schultz assisted on a pair of Soo goals.

Kade Phipps turned away 40 shots to earn the win in net.

The Eagles return to the ice Friday at Espanola.
