MISportsNow Year in Review: Spring 2016

MISportsNow continues its three-part year in review with the spring season, beginning with the Upper Peninsula boys golf state finals.

St. Ignace won its first Division 2 state title since 2012 and second in school history, besting Norway in the finals, while Cedarville secured a runner-up finish in Division 3.

On the girls side, Cedarville claimed its first Division 3 state championship since 2012, while DeTour’s Madison Wilkie fired an 85 to win the Division 3 individual state title.

In girls tennis, the Traverse City St. Francis program secured its second consecutive Division 4 runner-up finish, falling to Bloomfield Hills Academy of Sacred Heart in back-to-back years.

Heading to the track, the Sanford Meridian boys track and field program won its second MHSAA Division 3 state title since 2014, while Evart secured its best showing ever with a runner-up finish in Division 4.

On the girls side, Clare took home the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Division 3 championship.

Finishing the spring season in East Lansing for the baseball and softball state finals, the Inland Lakes softball program made history in 2016, reaching a Division 4 state title game for the first time in history.

After posting a 2-0 win over Holton in its first state semifinal appearance since 1999, the Bulldogs (26-3) fell 1-0 to Unionville-Sebewaing Area. 

Inland Lakes is set to return its entire lineup next spring, including eight seniors.

On the baseball diamond, Traverse City West captured its first regional title in program history en route to reaching its first Division 1 state semifinal. Finishing the year ranked ninth, the Titans (41-3) fell to eventual state champion Warren DeLaSalle, 3-1.

In Division 3, unranked Mason County Central made its first appearance in a state semifinal after capturing its first regional title since 1998. The Spartans (28-9) would fall 9-0 to state powerhouse Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett.

Capping off the baseball season, eighth-ranked Gaylord St. Mary (31-6) concluded its year with an appearance in the Division 4 state semifinals. The Ski Valley Conference champions fell 2-0 to eventual state runner-up Portland St. Patrick.
