The Michigan High School Athletic Association recently announced changes to its Upper Peninsula boys and girls golf tournaments and baseball for the 2016-17 seasons.
The Representative Council of the MHSAA approved the reclassification of participating schools for the U.P. boys and girls golf postseason tournaments. Beginning in the spring of 2017, schools will be divided into three equal divisions, with Class A, B, C and D schools split between Divisions 1-3. Prior to the change, Division 3 was reserved solely for Class D schools. However, Class D schools now outnumber Division 1 and 2 schools by nearly twice as much.
In accordance with the National Federation of State High School Associations, baseball pitchers will now be required to follow a pitch count limit, as opposed to the previously enforced limit on innings based on the number of outs thrown. With the effort to prevent pitcher injuries in mind, pitchers can throw a maximum of 105 pitches in one day, with those throwing 75 or more now requiring three days of rest. Pitchers who throw between 51-75 pitches require two days of rest, while those tossing 26-50 will need one rest day. Those pitching 25 or loss will not require rest.
