Big Rapids Finishes Third at D3 State Finals

EAST LANSING – The Big Rapids boys golf program finished third at the MHSAA Division 3 state finals at Michigan State’s Forest Akers East on Saturday.

The Cardinals entered the day tied for sixth and finished 19 strokes behind state champion Tawas.

Carter Bechaz led Big Rapids on Saturday with a 71, finishing the two-day tournament with a 147.

Houghton Lake also came home in fifth (631), while Manistee tied for ninth (643),

Qualifying as an individual, Gladwin’s Jonathon Damzyn finished with a 151 over two days, while Shelby’s Keaton Inglis carded a 154.

Tri-County’s Marcus Hall fired a 164, while Cheboygan’s Adam Jeannotte recorded a 175.

At the Division 4 state championship at Forest Akers West, Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart took home a fourth-place finish, ending with a 690, finishing 53 strokes behind winner Clarkston Everest Collegiate.

Harbor Springs also finished eighth (728), while Frankfort was 10th (736) and defending state champion Suttons Bay 13th (771).

Mesick’s Alex Stanton finished eighth overall, recording a 156 over the two-day event.

Ryan Navin from Traverse City St. Francis concluded the tournament with a 168, while East Jordan’s Logan Smith shot a 176.

In Division 2 at Battle Creek’s Bedford Valley, Ludington’s Ethan Leavitt finished tied for 10th overall, carding a 74 on Saturday for a two-day total of 147.

Mt. Pleasant’s Jack Pilkington also fired a 72 on the final day to finish with a 151, while Petoskey’s Max Brown shot a 77 on Saturday to finish with a 155.
