Q&A: Mark Ruffalo on playing the lawyer who took on DuPont

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mark Ruffalo plays the real-life corporate attorney Rob Bilott in the new movie “Dark Waters.”

The film chronicles Bilott’s 20-year fight against the massive corporation DuPont which would expose the harmful effects of a chemical called PFOA that was used in numerous household items until it was phased out. DuPont and another company ultimately made a payout of more than $600 million in a class action lawsuit.

Ruffalo says he set out to acquire the film rights to the story after reading the 2016 Nathaniel Rich article “The Lawyer Who Became DuPont’s Worst Nightmare.”

The legal thriller opens in limited release Thursday night.

DuPont says in a statement that the film “misrepresents things that happened years ago” and the company supports regulating the chemicals highlighted in “Dark Waters.”
