In ‘Knock Down the House,’ the rise of an AOC-led storm
NEW YORK (AP) — The maker of “Knock Down the House” says her documentary about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign for Congress isn’t what some of the freshman representative’s political rivals believe it to be.
Rachel Lears’ Netflix documentary follows four progressive insurgent candidates, all women, running grassroots campaigns in 2018. Among them is the Bronx-born Ocasio-Cortez, whom the filmmaker documented ahead of her unexpected primary defeat of Rep. Joe Crowley.
Lears says that some speculation about the film has often been wrong, and that Ocasio-Cortez had no editorial control over it and didn’t profit from it.
The film won the audience award at January’s Sundance Film Festival, where Netflix acquired it for $10 million — a documentary record for the festival.
“Knock Down the House ” premieres on Netflix on Wednesday.
