Here is the latest Michigan sports news from The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions selected a pair of defensive tackles on the second day of the NFL draft. They took Levi Onwuzurike of Washington in the second round and Alim McNeill of N.C. State in the third.  Onwuzurike played mostly nose tackle with the Huskies. He was a second-team All-American in the preseason, but he opted out of the 2020 season. It’s the second straight day the Lions tried to improve on the line of scrimmage. They drafted offensive tackle Penei Sewell with the seventh overall pick. Later in the third round, the Lions took cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu of Syracuse.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) — Michigan prep basketball star Emoni Bates says he is reopening his recruitment. He said last year he was heading to Michigan State. Bates is the top recruit in the country for the class of 2022, according to 247Sports. He posted a message on social media in which he thanked Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, but said he was reopening his recruitment. Bates says he’s keeping all his options open, college and pro. In 2020, Bates was named Gatorade’s national player of the year, the first sophomore to win the award.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State says it has informed football recruit Steffan Johnson that he will not be a part of the program following his arrest in Florida. Johnson, a cornerback from Venice, Florida, signed with the Spartans in December. He was arrested for extortion directing or promoting sexual performance by a child in North Port, Florida, according to the Detroit Free Press, which obtained a police report. Johnson is accused of threatening a juvenile female with posting sexual videos on social media.

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge hit a grand slam for one of two homers to earn an early exit, Gerrit Cole struck out 12 and the New York Yankees routed the Detroit Tigers 10-0. The frequently injured Judge was held out of New York’s starting lineup in its previous two games with what the Yankees described as lower body soreness. Manager Aaron Boone has said repeatedly he’s eager to get Judge off his feet when he can — akin to the load management practice that’s become common in the NBA. Clint Frazier, Aaron Hicks and Rougned Odor also homered for New York.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks addressed one of their needs by selecting Western Michigan wide receiver D’Wayne Eskridge with the No. 56 overall pick in the second round of the NFL draft. The Seahawks took the speedy playmaker to add to a wide receiver group that already includes Tyler Locket and DK Metcalf but lacked depth. Eskridge is undersized at 5-foot-9 and may project as more of a slot receiver in the NFL. But his speed is elite and could end up being a matchup problem for Seattle opponents.
