DETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera homered through the snow in his first at-bat of the season, then added a sparkling play at first base to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Matthew Boyd beat reigning Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber, and the Tigers welcomed their fans back to Comerica Park with a victory. The temperature at game time was 32 degrees, and the snow was starting to pick up a bit when Cabrera connected for his 488th career homer. Bieber struck out 12 in six innings for Cleveland.

SUNRISE. Fla.- (AP) — Alex Wennberg scored the winning goal in overtime and the Florida Panthers beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2. Frank Vatrano had a goal and an assist and Noel Acciari also scored a goal for the Panthers. Chris Driedger made 25 saves. Carter Verhaeghe recorded two assists and the Panthers have won four straight games.Anthony Mantha and Adam Erne scored goals for the Red Wings. Thomas Greiss stopped 33 shots. Patrik Nemeth had two assists. The Red Wings lost their sixth consecutive road game.  

UNDATED (AP) — Michigan’s Juwan Howard is The Associated Press men’s college basketball coach of the year. Howard received 35 of 63 votes from a national media panel. Gonzaga’s Mark Few was second with 16 votes. Baylor’s Scott Drew and Alabama’s Nate Oats tied at five each. Howard has put a quick imprint on his alma mater, continuing the winning tradition John Beilein started. He has also made big inroads in recruiting. Michigan reached No. 2 in The Associated Press poll and finished the regular season No. 4. The Wolverines lost to UCLA in the NCAA regional finals earlier this week.

DETROIT (AP) — Josh Jackson scored 19 of his season-high 31 points in the first half and the Detroit Pistons went on to rout the Washington Wizards 120-91. The Pistons overcame Russell Westbrook’s 18th triple-double of the season. Westbrook finished with 16 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds. He also had nine turnovers. Mason Plumlee added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who had seven players in double figures. Robin Lopez had 16 points for Washington and Alex Len added 14. 

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have signed free agent cornerback Corn Elder. The Lions announced the move Thursday. Elder appeared in 16 games for the Carolina Panthers last season, making one start. He originally entered the NFL with the Panthers after being selected in the fifth round of the 2017 draft out of Miami. He also was with the New York Giants’ practice squad in 2019. He’s played 30 career games.
