Here is the latest Michigan sports news from The Associated Press
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan quarterback Joe Milton has entered the transfer portal, depleting coach Jim Harbaugh’s depth at the position. Milton made the announcement Thursday on Twitter, thanking Harbaugh for giving him an opportunity. Milton wrote that he will have three years of eligibility remaining as a graduate transfer. He won the starting job with the Wolverines last year after beating out Dylan McCaffrey. The brother of Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey chose not to come back to the program for a fourth year in 2020. He transferred last month to play for his father at Northern Colorado.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The University of Michigan and athletic director Warde Manuel have agreed on a five-year contract extension, shortly after the head of the department negotiated a new deal with football coach Jim Harbaugh. University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel recommended the move to retain Manuel and the school’s governing body approved the agreement Thursday. Manuel played football for the late Bo Schembechler and was a part of the Wolverines’ track and field program. He was hired by Michigan in 2016 after he was athletic director at Connecticut and Buffalo, which he helped establish as a Division I program.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Franz Wagner scored 20 points and Mike Smith added 12 to lift No. 3 Michigan to a 71-64 victory over Rutgers. Hunter Dickinson added 10 points for the Wolverines, who won their second straight game since returning from a lengthy layoff after the athletic department paused activities for coronavirus-related reasons. Michigan avoided a slip-up before its showdown at No. 4 Ohio State this weekend. Jacob Young scored 16 points for Rutgers, which led early but lacked the offensive sharpness necessary to keep up with Michigan.
UNDATED (AP) — A documentary about the life and career of Mike “Doc” Emrick will air on NBC on Sunday after an NHL outdoor game at Lake Tahoe. The now-retired voice of hockey in the United States did interviews for the special but has asked the network not to tell him anything about it in advance. Emrick wants to watch it live with his wife, Joyce, like everyone else. The 74-year-old called it a “present” and didn’t want to know anything ahead of time. The documentary features over a dozen current and former players and broadcasters sharing their thoughts on Emrick, his famous calls and his impact on hockey.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Ali Patberg scored 21 points and No. 14 Indiana made a couple key defensive plays in the final minute to defeat No. 11 Michigan 70-65. Mackenzie Holmes had a key steal under the Michigan basket and a defensive rebound, plays that led to the closing free throws that allowed the Hoosiers to seal the game. The final score was Indiana’s largest lead of the game while Michigan’s big lead of six came late in the first quarter. There were 17 lead changes and 12 ties. Naz Hillmon had 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolverines.
UNDATED (AP) — No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 Ohio State are set to meet. The Wolverines didn’t need much time to shake off the rust from a three-week layoff, and the Buckeyes are rolling along. Michigan rallied to win at No. 21 Wisconsin last Sunday in its first game back. The school had put all activities on hold due to several positive tests for a COVID-19 variant that transmits at a higher rate. The Wolverines host Rutgers in what could be a tough matchup on Thursday. Ohio State has won six straight, the longest active streak in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes visit Penn State on Thursday.
