DETROIT (AP) — Donovan Mitchell scored 13 of his 28 points in a decisive first quarter, and the Utah Jazz held on for a 96-86 victory over the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons were coming off an overtime win over Phoenix on Friday night in which they rallied from a 23-point deficit, but they couldn’t climb out of another big hole. Utah led by 20 before the first quarter was over. Detroit had the ball down five late in the fourth, but Rudy Gobert blocked a shot by Mason Plumlee, and Mike Conley made two free throws to make it 93-86 with 1:00 remaining.
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Kate Cain blocked a 3-point shot with five seconds remaining and Whitney Brown followed with the clinching free throw and Nebraska upset No. 23 Michigan State 68-64. The Spartans, who went cold in the fourth quarter, pulled within 67-64 on a putback by Kendall Bostic. A quick foul sent Bella Cravens to the line where she missed two free throws. Alyza Winston’s attempt to tie was blocked by Cain, allowing Nebraska to escape with a win after falling 64-62 at No. 15 Michigan on Thursday. Isabelle Bourne scored 18 points to lead the Cornhuskers. Nia Clouden led the Spartans, who dropped their second straight after falling to No. 12 Maryland 93-87, with 14.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Naz Hillmon scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and No. 15 Michigan continued its school-best star with a 70-50 win over Illinois. Akienreh Johnson added 17 points points and Amy Dilk 11, plus both grabbed nine rebounds, for the 9-0 Wolverines, whose previous best start was 7-0 three different times, the last in 2015-16. Jeanae Terry scored 17 points for the Illini and Kennedi Myles had 12. Illinois has lost five straight. Leigha Brown, the Wolverines’ second-leading scorer (19.7 ppg), missed her second-straight game for what the program would only call COVID protocols.
UNDATED (AP) — The NHL’s Central Division features the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning and the runner-up Dallas Stars among its eight teams. The new-look Central also includes Carolina, Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Florida and Nashville. They will all get to know one another very well because each of the 56 games in the regular season that starts on Wednesday night and ends in early May will be within the division. The defending Central champion St. Louis Blues and Colorado were sent to the West Division this year. Tampa Bay is shooting to be the fourth team in three decades to repeat
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings claimed defenseman Christian Djoos off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks. The Red Wings announced the move. The 26-year-old Djoos played 11 games for Anaheim and Washington last season, finishing with a goal and two assists. He has five goals and 22 assists in 119 NHL games, mostly with the Capitals. Djoos played in 22 playoff games in 2018 during Washington’s run to the Stanley Cup title. The Capitals drafted him in the seventh round in 2012.
KENT, Ohio (AP) — Mike Nuga had 26 points as Kent State easily defeated Western Michigan 80-54. B. Artis White led the Broncos with 12 points.
