Here is the latest Michigan sports news from The Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have rarely shied from a ground-oriented approach on offense in seven seasons under coach Mike Zimmer. That strong-arm strategy was never more apparent than in their last game when Dalvin Cook carried the ball 30 times in a potentially pivotal victory at Green Bay. That was the most rushing attempts by a Vikings player since 2013. Minnesota hosts Detroit this week. Cook’s predecessor, Adrian Peterson, plays for the Lions. The Vikings are 2-5. The Lions are 3-4.
UNDATED (AP) — Michigan State heads into its game at Iowa on Saturday feeling a lot better about itself than it did two weeks ago. The Spartans are fresh off a win over in-state rival Michigan. The Hawkeyes are looking for answers after their first 0-2 start since 2000. Michigan State and Iowa have met just twice since 2013, with the Spartans winning in the 2015 Big Ten championship game and at home in 2017. Michigan State is going for a third straight win in Iowa City for the first time since the 1970s.
UNDATED (AP) — No. 13 Indiana already has two big achievements this season. On Saturday, the Hoosiers can add another by snapping a 24-game losing streak against No. 23 Michigan. In Week 1, the Hoosiers upset a top-10 foe for the first time in 33 years by beating Penn State. Last weekend, they earned their highest ranking in the Top 25 since 1987. And if they hand the Wolverines a second consecutive loss, Indiana would have its first win over Michigan since 1987, too.
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have hired Chris Fetter as pitching coach. The Tigers announced that move, along with three other picks for new manager AJ Hinch’s staff. Juan Nieves was promoted to assistant pitching coach, Josh Paul remains on the staff as a quality control coach, and Ramon Santiago returns as a base coach. The 34-year-old Fetter has been a pitching coach at the University of Michigan for three seasons. Michigan reached the finals of the College World Series in 2019. Nieves spent two seasons as pitching coach at Toledo, Detroit’s Triple-A affiliate. Paul and Santiago are holdovers from the major league staff.
UNDATED (AP) — The top game in the Big Ten this weekend has No. 23 Michigan going on the road to face No. 13 Indiana. The Hoosiers are looking for their first win over the Wolverines since 1987 and first 3-0 start in Big Ten play since 1988. Northwestern will be tasked with controlling the Nebraska quarterback tandem of Adrian Martinez and Luke McCaffrey. Those two combined for 164 of the Cornhuskers’ 210 yards rushing against Ohio State two weeks ago. Penn State goes into its home game against Maryland having outscored the Terrapins 163-6 over the last three meetings.
