Here is the latest Michigan sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — The once-proud Detroit Red Wings hope to win the NHL draft lottery, giving them a shot to select Canadian Alexis Lafreniere. Detroit desperately needs a boost after easily being the worst team in the league during the pandemic-shortened season that was put on ice in March. Lafreniere, an 18-year-old winger, is the consensus top prospect available and appears to be talented enough to potentially help next season and for years to come. The Red Wings and the rest the league will find out Friday night which team will be fortunate enough to have an opportunity to take him.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan officially announced that Mike Smith and Chaundee Brown are joining the basketball program as transfers. The school says both players have been admitted. Smith has immediate eligibility, and Michigan is assessing the potential for an NCAA waiver for Brown. The 5-foot-11 Smith comes to Michigan from Columbia, where he averaged 22.8 points a game last season. The 6-foot-5 Brown averaged 12.1 points for Wake Forest. Brown said in April he was entering his name into the NBA draft as well as the NCAA transfer portal.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have finalized minor league deals with three more draft picks, including second-round selection Burl Carraway. Left-hander Luke Little and right-hander Koen Moreno also signed their contracts. Little was selected in the fourth round and Moreno went in the fifth. The Cubs announced first-round pick Ed Howard’s deal on Monday. Jordan Nwogu, an outfielder from the University of Michigan who went in the third round at No. 88 overall, is the only unsigned pick for Chicago from this year’s amateur draft.
