ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan hired Josh Gattis away from Alabama to be Jim Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator. Harbaugh gave Gattis a title no one had on his staff last year when he said playing-calling was a collaborative effort. The 34-year-old Gattis was a co-offensive coordinator last season for the Crimson Tide. Nick Saban has called Gattis an outstanding recruiter with a promising future. Gattis was Penn State’s wide receivers coach and passing-game coordinator the previous four seasons.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Buddy Hield scored 18 points, Willie Cauley-Stein had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and the Sacramento Kings beat the Detroit Pistons 112-102 with Blake Griffin out for rest. Iman Shumpert had 13 points and De’Aaron Fox had 12 points and six assists for the Kings, who had lost five of six. Stanley Johnson had 16 points off the bench, Reggie Bullock added 15 points and Andre Drummond had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost four straight and 9 of 11.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Rick Forzano, who was the coach of the Detroit Lions during the mid-1970s and hired a young Bill Belichick to work on his staff, has died. He was 90. Forzano coached the Lions for the 1974 and 1975 seasons, plus the first four games in 1976. He went 15-17. Forzano also had stints as the coach at Connecticut and Navy.

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have avoided arbitration with reliever Shane Greene, agreeing to a $4 million, one-year contract with the right-hander. Greene went 4-6 with a 5.12 ERA and 32 saves last season.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Brad Salem is taking over as Michigan State’s offensive coordinator after coach Mark Dantonio rearranged several roles on his staff. The Spartans did not announce any firings or new hires, but several assistants will be in different jobs. Salem moves from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator, and he’ll also coach running backs.
