Here is the latest Michigan sports news from The Associated Press
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Zach Whitecloud scored two goals in his first game back after hand surgery and the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-2. The win snapped Vegas’ three-game losing streak in the series and marked the first time the Golden Knights beat Detroit at home since they joined the NHL in 2017. Vegas improved to 9-3-0 since Oct. 26, after opening the season 1-4-0. Nic Hague, Paul Cotter and Reilly Smith also scored for the Golden Knights. Robin Lehner made 26 saves. Givani Smith and Joe Veleno scored for Detroit, and starting goaltender Thomas Greiss stopped 18 shots before being pulled after two periods. Alex Nedeljkovic replaced Greiss and made nine saves.
DECATUR, Mich. (AP) — The discovery of nine poached trophy bucks in a barn has led to 15 state wildlife charges against a southwestern Michigan man. Police investigating an October domestic violence complaint discovered the bucks in a barn in the Van Buren County village of Decatur. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said 33-year-old Justin Ernst of Decatur is suspected of driving his truck through fields, shining a light on the deer and shooting them. The charges against Ernst include nine counts of taking game illegally, four weapons counts and one count each of hunting with a revoked hunting license and obtaining a hunting license when ineligible.
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Lions and Browns both enter Sunday’s game desperate for different reasons. Detroit is still seeking its first win after coming so close last week and settling for a 16-16 tie in Pittsburgh. Cleveland was embarrassed 45-7 at New England and the Browns can’t afford many more losses or their postseason hopes will disappear. Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is expected to play despite missing practice time this week with shoulder, foot and knee injuries. Detroit QB Jared Goff seems to be more of a longshot to play after suffering an oblique injury against the Steelers. The Browns are just 5-19 all-time against the Lions.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Michigan State coach Mel Tucker promised his players they would be playing for championships. The No. 7 Spartans could get one step closer if they can upset No. 4 Ohio State on Saturday at the Horseshoe. That’s a tall order for the one-loss Spartans, who come in as big underdogs. The winner will stay in the Big Ten East and College Football Playoff races. The Buckeyes and their high-powered offense have won eight straight since being upset by Oregon in Week 2.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — While Michigan is thinking about it’s upcoming showdown with Ohio State the Wolverines can ill afford to overlook this weekend’s matchup versus Maryland. If the eighth-ranked Wolverines don’t win at Maryland on Saturday, their Big Ten championship hopes could be gone. This is the type of game the Wolverines need to ensure they focus on. It comes between a big victory over Penn State last weekend and the showdown with the Buckeyes. Maryland is one win away from becoming bowl eligible. The Terps haven’t played in a bowl since 2016.
