Here is the latest Michigan sports news from The Associated Press
DETROIT (AP) — Trey Lyles scored eight of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and the Detroit Pistons won for the third time in five games, beating the Orlando Magic 97-92 on Saturday night in a matchup of the NBA’s two worst teams. After ending last year with 18 losses in 19 games, the Pistons have beaten San Antonio, Milwaukee and the Magic since New Year’s Day. They improved to 8-30. Hamadou Diallo added 17 points, and Saddiq Bey had 16 points. Lyles also had 13 rebounds. Gary Harris had a season-high 28 points for the Magic. They have lost eight straight to fall to 7-33.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cal Petersen stopped all 21 shots he faced in his first start in more than a month, Phillip Danault and Drew Doughty scored in the first period, and the Los Angeles Kings rolled to a 4-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Adrian Kempe scored short-handed, Trevor Moore added an empty-net goal and the Kings won for the third time in four games. Alex Nedeljkovic allowed three goals on 40 shots for the Red Wings, who have lost four in a row on the road. Petersen was rarely challenged in his first game since a Dec. 6 loss at Vancouver. He posted his second career shutout.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan State-Michigan men’s basketball game has been postponed because the Wolverines have fewer than seven scholarship players cleared to play due to pandemic protocols. The 10th-ranked Spartans were slated to go for their ninth straight win. Michigan and Michigan State will work with the Big Ten to reschedule the first of two scheduled games with the rivals. Both schools are requiring proof of vaccination for fans to attend indoor events or a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the game.
UNDATED (AP) — Aaron Rodgers knows the Green Bay Packers have clinched the NFC’s No. 1 seed and can’t improve their playoff positioning with a win over the lowly Detroit Lions. The reigning NFL MVP still wants to play Sunday at Ford Field even though that would increase his chances of getting injured. The Packers are closing the regular season strong with five straight wins, earning home-field advantage in the conference playoffs for the second straight year and winning the NFC North for the third season in a row. The Lions are limping toward the end of coach Dan Campbell’s first season.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) — Luke Bumbalough had 20 points as Ball State defeated Eastern Michigan 78-72 in Mid-American Conference play. Tyler Cochran had 17 points for the Cardinals (7-7, 2-1 Mid-American Conference), who ended a four-game losing streak on the road. Colin Golson Jr. had 16 points to lead the Eagles (6-7, 1-1).
