EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Chester Kimbrough intercepted Adrian Martinez’s pass in overtime and Matt Coghlin made a 21-yard field goal to keep No. 20 Michigan State unbeaten with a 23-20 win over Nebraska. The Spartans won despite not converting a first down in the second half. Michigan State’s special teams came up big late in regulation. Jayden Reed returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown with 3:47 left in regulation to tie it 20-all. This was Nebraska’s 14th straight loss to a ranked team. The Huskers haven’t beaten a Top 25 opponent on the road since 2011.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Hassan Haskins ran for touchdowns the first two times No. 19 Michigan had the ball and the undefeated Wolverines had to hold on to beat Rutgers 20-13. Michigan opened conference play by running the ball on its first seven snaps and Jim Harbaugh’s conservative game plan almost cost him. After leading 20-3 at halftime, the Wolverines failed to pick up a first down on their first four possessions in the second half. The Scarlet Knights rallied from a 17-point, third-quarter deficit to pull within seven early in the fourth quarter.

DETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera drove in four runs, including a go-ahead, two-run double in the sixth inning, and the Detroit Tigers downed the Kansas City Royals 5-1. Jeimer Candelario supplied a run-scoring double for the Tigers, who have won five of six. Jonathan Schoop had two hits and scored two runs. Winning pitcher Drew Hutchison allowed only an unearned run in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Michael Fulmer got four outs for his 12th save. Royals starter Jon Heasley held the Tigers scoreless over 5 1/3 innings in his second career outing. Detroit left fielder Akil Baddoo robbed Hunter Dozier of a homer with a leaping catch in the third.

DETROIT (AP) — Carlos Hernandez pitched five shutout innings and Whit Merrifield drove in a pair of runs as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 3-1. The win clinched the season series for the Royals, who lead 10-7 with two games remaining. Hernandez allowed two hits, walked  three and hit a batter, one start after allowing seven runs in four innings against the Oakland A’s. Four relievers finished, with Scott Barlow pitching the ninth for his 15th save. Detroit’s Casey Mize gave up one run on two hits in three innings. Detroit’s best young pitcher is working as an opener to reduce his innings.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Kaleb Eleby threw for two touchdowns and the Western Michigan defense dominated in a 23-3 win over San Jose State. Eleby found Jaylen Hall for 22 yards and Corey Crooms for 37 as the Broncos led 20-3 at halftime after the Spartans opened the scoring with a field goal. Eleby was 17 of 28 for 200 yards as Western Michigan finished with 347 yards of offense. San Jose State had 119 yards and three turnovers, and three different quarterbacks were ineffective under pressure. 

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) — Ben Bryant threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead Eastern Michigan to a 59-21 win over Texas State. The Eagles used a balanced attack in picking up the win with four passing touchdowns and four on the ground. Eastern Michigan threw for 257 yards and rushed for 247 in outgaining the Bobcats 504-300. Bryant’s 39-yard run gave Eastern Michigan a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and the Eagles never trailed. The Bobcats cut the lead to 28-21 early in the third quarter but the Eagles responded with 31 consecutive points.
