Here is the latest Michigan sports news from The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — Dan Campbell is taking over a team that isn’t supposed to win much this year and is leading a franchise as synonymous with losing as any in the NFL over the last several decades. The Campbell era in Detroit begins Sunday at home against the San Francisco 49ers. Campbell plans to prove people wrong and his players do, too.  The Niners won just six games last season as injuries sent some of their best players to the sideline. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, tight end George Kittle and defensive end Nick Bosa are back after missing much of last year with injuries.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Washington has a lot to prove, coming off a loss to Montana. Michigan does, too. The two unranked teams will meet Saturday night at the Big House in Michigan. The Huskies went into the season as the 20th-ranked team in the country and it opened with a thud in a 13-7 home loss to the Grizzlies. Washington became the first ranked FBS team to lose to a FCS team in five years. The Wolverines got off to a much better start, routing Western Michigan 47-14. They lost receiver and returner Ronnie Bell to an injury in the opener.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Kenneth Walker III had a breakout performance at running back last week for Michigan State. He piled up 264 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Northwestern. He says he is focusing on Saturday’s home game against Youngstown State. It will be the school’s first home game with fans in more than 21 months. The Penguins have their own electric runner in Jaleel McLaughlin, who ran for 242 yards and caught passes for 46 more in his team’s season-opening win.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin will try to bounce back from its season-opening loss to Penn State by ending Eastern Michigan’s uncanny recent run of success against Big Ten teams. Eastern Michigan has won on the road in each of its last three meetings with Big Ten programs. The Eagles won 16-13 at Rutgers in 2017, 20-19 at Purdue in 2018 and 34-31 at Illinois in 2019.  The Eagles seek to extend that streak and beat a Top 25 team for the first time when they visit No. 18 Wisconsin on Saturday night.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers defense had a different feel once star edge rusher Nick Bosa returned to practice. Now the Niners can’t wait to see Bosa’s dominance in a game when he returns from a knee injury in the season opener at Detroit on Sunday. Linebacker Fred Warner calls Bosa a “game wrecker” who has the ability to destroy offensive game plans. That was lacking last season for San Francisco after Bosa went down with a torn ACL in Week 2.
