Here is the latest Michigan sports news from The Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Blake Griffin scored 34 points and Reggie Bullock added a career-high 33 as the Detroit Pistons beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 129-123 in overtime. Reggie Jackson added 24 points and Andre Drummond had 16 points and 16 rebounds for Detroit.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — In the same hour, Michigan had an expected departure and a surprise signing. Devin Bush announced he’s skipping his senior season and entering the NFL draft on the opening day of the early signing period in a move that wasn’t a surprise. Bush shared his decision on Twitter and Instagram shortly after the Wolverines welcomed five-star defensive back Dax Hill to its 20-plus player recruiting class. Hill had committed to play at Alabama after previously planning to attend Michigan.
DETROIT (AP) — The rebuilding Detroit Tigers aren’t a team that’s likely to turn many heads this offseason, but they’ve wasted little time in pursuing their objectives, making three quiet free agent signings already. Steady shortstop Jordy Mercer reached a one-year deal with Detroit, and so did pitchers Matt Moore and Tyson Ross. After two straight 98-loss seasons, the Tigers have been content to give out short-term contracts while waiting for some of their top prospects to reach the majors.
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State cornerback Justin Layne will miss the team’s bowl game after declaring his intention to leave for the NFL draft. Layne, a junior, said on Twitter last week that he would be entering the draft. Coach Mark Dantonio says Layne wouldn’t be playing in the Redbox Bowl against Oregon on Dec. 31.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana attorney general says his office is investigating USA Gymnastics, which has filed for bankruptcy due to the Larry Nassar sexual-abuse scandal. USA Gymnastics is the national governing body for the sport. It recently filed for bankruptcy protection while it faces lawsuits from Nassar’s victims, who accuse USA Gymnastics of failing to supervise the doctor. In a statement, Attorney General Curtis Hill says his office has been investigating USA Gymnastics. He didn’t offer any details.
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State has signed offensive lineman Devontae Dobbs of Detroit as part of its 2019 recruiting class. Dobbs, a five-star recruit according to 247Sports, played for Belleville High School. He’s part of what Mark Dantonio says might be the best class of offensive linemen he’s signed in over a decade as Michigan State’s coach. The Spartans announced 20 new additions, a couple of whom are walk-ons.
