ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Wily Peralta had his longest big league outing since 2016 as the Detroit Tigers opened their series in Texas with a 7-3 win. Pertalta’s seven scoreless innings came in his fourth start for the Tigers. The 32-year-old right-hander went to spring training with them on a minor league deal. He hasn’t been a full-time starter in the majors since 2017. Rangers lefty Kolby Allard struck out a career-high nine in 5 1/3 innings. Two of the five runs against him were unearned. Zack Short hit a two-run homer and had a sacrifice fly for the Tigers. 

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Detroit Tigers center fielder Daz Cameron is out of the starting lineup after running into a wall. Cameron sustained a sprained big right toe after crashing into the wall before the series opener at Texas. Cameron hit the wall while tracking flyballs during batting practice before the Tigers played at Globe Life Field for the first time. Cameron was set to bat sixth. Cameron’s removal from the lineup led to five changes in the batting order. Rookie Akil Baddoo was added to the lineup in center field and hit in the leadoff spot.

UNDATED (AP) — Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died of chest trauma from an errant fireworks mortar blast in what authorities described as a tragic accident on the Fourth of July. Police in Novi, Michigan, say the firework tilted slightly and started to fire toward people nearby. The 24-year-old Kivlenieks was in a hot tub and tried to get clear with several other people. Authorities had earlier said the Latvian  died of an apparent head injury during a fall. An autopsy clarified the cause of death. Blue Jackets president of hockey operations John Davidson called it a “devastating time” for the team.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan guard DeVante’ Jones has withdrawn from the NBA draft. The transfer from Coastal Carolina made the announcement Monday on Twitter. Jones was the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year last season. He averaged 20 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and three steals as a junior. Jones was the 2019 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and was an all-conference player as a sophomore. Michigan freshman center Hunter Dickinson entered the NBA draft, but the Big Ten Freshman of the Year left open the option of staying for his sophomore season.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Chip Hale is returning to Arizona. The school announced that the Tigers third base coach is leaving Detroit for Tucson, where he won a national championship as a player in 1986. Hale replaces Jay Johnson, who left last week to become the coach at LSU after leading the Wildcats to the 2021 College World Series. Hale was an infielder for four seasons at Arizona and is still the all-time leader in several categories, including games, hits and total bases. He went on to play seven big league seasons with Minnesota and the Los Angeles Dodgers before becoming coach of the Triple-A Tucson Sidewinders. Hale spent 15 seasons in the majors as a coach with stints at Detroit, Washington, Oakland, Arizona and the New York Mets.
