Here is the latest Michigan news from The Associated Press at 8:40 a.m. EDT

FOWLERVILLE, Mich. (AP) — A mid-Michigan auto shop has replaced a Halloween display depicting a scowling President Donald Trump holding the severed head of former President Barack Obama by a black rope. The Detroit Free Press reports that Quality Coatings owner Dave Huff removed the rope and Obama mask Friday outside the business in Fowlerville, about 66 miles northwest of Detroit, following criticism on social media. Huff told the newspaper Sunday that he’s not racist and “no race ever went into this thing.”

DETROIT (AP) — He was the longest-serving black member of Congress and founder of the Black Caucus. Former Democratic Rep. John Conyers of Detroit is dead at age 90. Conyers’ liberal stance on civil rights and civil liberties made him a political institution. And he fought for 15 years to get Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday designated a national holiday. Conyers’ legacy was smeared in 2017 following allegations that he sexually harassed female staffers. He denied the allegations but eventually stepped down.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Republicans who control Michigan’s Legislature say the state budget will not be resolved until Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer agrees to restrict her power to shift money within departments. Nearly a month has passed since Whitmer signed a spending plan while vetoing nearly $1 billion to reopen budget negotiations following a breakdown in talks. Whitmer is not interested in diminishing gubernatorial powers but says she would not use a board to undo any budget agreement that is reached.

CORUNNA, Mich. (AP) — A man thought he would fool police by giving them a false identity. It backfired: A man with that name was wanted by authorities. The case in Shiawassee County ended Friday when Deonte Wilson was sentenced to about 18 months in prison for a drug charge and other crimes. The Argus-Press reports that Wilson was stopped by police in September 2018. Officers arrested him when he identified himself as someone who was wanted by police. The mix-up was solved at the jail, but Wilson was in trouble.
