MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities in suburban Detroit are searching for the remains of missing girls, more than a year after a similar excavation. Heavy machines are in Macomb County’s Macomb Township, about 30 miles northeast of Detroit. The excavation began Monday in a wooded area near the Clinton River. No remains were found during a search in 2018. The sheriff’s office says it’s “hoping to bring justice to victims and closure to their families.” It didn’t say what prompted a second search.
PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A Democrat is running Michigan’s second-largest county after the death of Republican L. Brooks Patterson, who was Oakland County executive for more than 25 years. David Coulter was the mayor of Ferndale until Monday. Oakland County commissioners hired him to serve through the 2020 election. Coulter says he wasn’t hired to “fix things” in the county, which is known for its strong finances and affluent communities.
DETROIT (AP) — A 9-year-old Detroit girl was killed when she was attacked by three dogs as she rode on a bike in an alley near her home. Detroit Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Nicole Kirkwood said neighbors tried to stop the Monday afternoon attack on the girl without success. Police haven’t identified the victim, who was taken to Children’s Hospital of Michigan, where she was pronounced dead. The Detroit Health Department seeks a court order to seize the animals, described as pit bulls or pit-bull mixes.
