SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Crews are restoring power after winter storm outages in Indiana and southwest Michigan. Indiana Michigan Power said Sunday that there were a total of 16,760 customers without power in the area around South Bend and Elkhart. In Michigan, there were a few hundred in the Buchanan and Three Rivers areas. Freezing rain and snowfall over the weekend knocked out power for thousands of households. I&M predicts power will be restored for all customers by Monday afternoon.
LYON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A small plane crashed into a house in southeastern Michigan, killing the pilot and two family members. Five people inside the two-story house in Lyon Township were able to avoid injury. Fire severely damaged the home, 40 miles northwest of Detroit. The plane was flying to the New Hudson airport from Cherokee County Regional Airport in Canton, Georgia. The victims were identified as David S. Compo, former president of the Home Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan, his wife Michele and their son Dawson. The association confirmed the deaths in a news release.
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their families will have an added level of privacy through a confidentiality measure signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The act replaces residential addresses on state IDs with a state post office address and allows the state to use a substitute mailing address in place of a residential address to mail correspondence. Those interested in participating must send an application to the state attorney general’s office. A written statement of risk if a person’s address is disclosed is required, but no criminal conviction is necessary to prove that risk.
PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — Oakland County in southeastern Michigan has been lauded again for its fiscal reporting. The county says the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has awarded Oakland top honors for the 29th year in a row. Oakland County earned the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its comprehensive annual financial report for the 2019 fiscal year. The report was published in 2020 and discloses the county’s finances in full detail to anyone who wants to review them.
