LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A former Michigan State University head gymnastics coach is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday for lying to police during an investigation into serial pedophile and ex-Olympic and university sports doctor Larry Nassar. Sixty-five-year-old Kathy Klages was found guilty by a jury in February of a felony and a misdemeanor for denying she knew of Nassar’s abuse prior to 2016 when survivors started to come forward publicly. Nassar was sentenced in 2018 to 40 to 175 years in prison for decades of sexual abuse to hundreds of athletes.
DETROIT (AP) — Police say a Michigan sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man suspected of stabbing another man who had challenged him about not wearing a mask inside a store. The shooting occurred in Eaton County, near Lansing, Michigan, about 30 minutes after the stabbing inside a Quality Dairy store. State police say a sheriff’s deputy spotted the man’s vehicle and shot 43-year-old Sean Ruis when he tried to attack her. He was holding a screwdriver and knives. Ruis died at a hospital. The 77-year-old stabbing victim is stable. Michigan’s governor has ordered people to wear masks in stores to reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus.
NOVI, Mich. (AP) — The first female to publicly say she was sexually abused by a team doctor at the University of Michigan says she hopes to inspire other women and men to come forward. Cathy Kalahar played tennis for the Wolverines in the 1970s. She has joined hundreds of Michigan graduates who allege doctor Robert Anderson molested them. Anderson died in 2008. Kalahar told The Associated Press on Monday that Anderson assaulted her during an exam when she was a freshman in 1973. She says a school counselor dismissed her complaint about the assault as a “sexual fantasy.”
TOKYO (AP) — Nissan is rolling out an electric crossover vehicle, the Japanese automaker’s first major all-new model since getting embroiled in the scandal surrounding its former chairman, Carlos Ghosn. The Ariya is set to go on sale in Japan by the middle of next year, and in Europe, North America and China by the end of 2021. The company says it will cost about 5 million yen ($46,000). At its global premiere, held online Wednesday in Yokohama, Japan, it was billed as “a new chapter.” Worries about global warming and the environment have made electric vehicles increasingly attractive.
