DETROIT (AP) — Prosecutors in Michigan say extradition proceedings are pending for a Detroit man charged with fatally shooting two people inside a senior citizens’ building. The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says 69-year-old James Fleming is being held Monday in Richmond, Virginia. Fleming surrendered to authorities there around midnight. He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, assault, kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — A southwestern Michigan woman who entered a plea deal after being charged in her 87-year-old mother’s overdose death has been sentenced to 5-15 years in prison. Sixty-year-old Susan Kubicek of Portage learned her punishment Monday after pleading no contest to involuntary manslaughter in the May 2017 death of Dorothy Allen. Kalamazoo County authorities say Allen got a morphine dose 80 times greater than what was prescribed. Kubicek told the court she was trying to follow a nurse’s instructions.

DETROIT (AP) — The Motown Museum’s expansion plans are getting a $500,000 boost. The grant from the DTE Energy Foundation was announced Monday by Robin Terry, CEO and chairwoman of the museum. The money will help support the development of an education and community engagement space at the museum for young artists that also will house the museum’s summer camp programs. The $50 million expansion will be built around the existing museum, which includes the original studio and famed “Hitsville U.S.A.” sign.

JACKSON, Mich. (AP) — A former inmate at a jail in southern Michigan has filed a federal lawsuit saying he was unjustly attacked and sprayed with mace following a 2016 arrest. MLive.com reports the lawsuit by 37-year-old Daniel Bewernitz of Fowlerville seeks more than $75,000 and includes the allegations about a Jackson County sheriff’s deputy. Bewernitz says he suffered a permanent injury to his right eye. The Jackson County sheriff’s office says it’s aware of the lawsuit, but couldn’t comment on details.
