HONOR, Mich. (AP) — Authorities have confirmed that a body found in northwestern Michigan is of a 47-year-old Detroit-area woman who was reported missing in October. The Benzie County sheriff’s office says a medical examiner didn’t immediately determine a cause of death for Adrienne Quintal, but investigators don’t suspect foul play. Relatives found her body Saturday in a flooded area on the family’s property near the village of Honor. The Southfield woman called a friend Oct. 17 and said she had been in a shootout with two men. Police found no signs that someone had been wounded but believe shots were fired from inside the cabin.
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A ballot group is planning to submit petitions to prohibit a second-trimester abortion procedure in Michigan. The Michigan Values Life committee says it will turn in nearly 380,000 voter signatures to the state on Monday. It needs roughly 340,000 signatures. If the petitions are certified as valid, the Republican-led Legislature will have a 40-day window to pass the initiative, and Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer can’t veto it. The dilation and evacuation procedure was used in 7% of abortions in Michigan last year. Anti-abortion groups call it “dismemberment.” Abortion-rights groups say the procedure is safe and constitutional.
COPEMISH, Mich. (AP) — Police say a knife-wielding man who forced his way into a couple’s northern Michigan home and threatened them with the weapon was fatally shot by one of the homeowners following a struggle. Michigan State Police said 29-year-old Nathan Reed of Copemish died Sunday afternoon at the shooting scene in a home in the Manistee County city. Troopers from the Cadillac post said that after Reed entered the home a physical struggle ensued during which one of the home’s occupants retrieved a firearm and shot him. The home’s female resident was treated at the scene for a minor head injury.
WARREN, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a 75-year-old man has been accused of fatally shooting a woman who lived next door to him in a Detroit-area apartment complex. Warren police say the woman was shot multiple times Sunday morning in the hallway of the building in which they lived. The man and the woman, 53, had a history of arguing. Investigators say the weapon was recovered from the man’s home and he was arrested. Their names haven’t been released.
