DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit police chief says a man has been arrested in the death of a 5-year-old girl who was fatally shot while in bed with her mother. Chief James Craig says the girl’s mother was shot 16 times Thursday night and is in a hospital Friday. Her daughter was shot once in the head. Craig says the shooting appeared to be related to a rift between the mother and her sisters. Separately, police executing a search warrant in the investigation fatally shot a man at a different address early Friday.

WARREN, Mich. (AP) — A 17-year-old Detroit-area girl has been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a classmate during a fight that authorities say was over a male student. Tanaya Lewis was arraigned Friday in Warren District Court on a first-degree murder charge, two days after police say 16-year-old Danyna Gibson was stabbed twice in the upper chest with a steak knife in Fitzgerald High School.

FRENCHTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say sheep running loose on a southeastern Michigan roadway have been safely captured and await a reunion with their owner. Monroe County sheriff’s officials said Friday the three sheep were found in Frenchtown Township last Saturday. They were taken to a nearby animal rescue and rehabilitation facility. Police say the owners have 15 days to reclaim the animals. The owners or anyone who knows them should contact Monroe County Animal Control.

CHELSEA, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan high school has decided to stop crowning homecoming queens amid bullying issues.
