LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is abolishing Michigan’s medical marijuana licensing board and folding its functions into a newly created regulatory agency. The Democrat issued an executive order Friday to create the Marijuana Regulatory Agency. She says her order will “eliminate inefficiencies that have made it difficult to meet the needs of Michigan’s medical marijuana patients.” The board has been criticized as too slow to issue licenses following a law that instituted a tiered regulatory system.

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A Detroit-area man known for being convicted of murder at age 13 has been arrested on a drug charge. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office says 33-year-old Nathaniel Abraham was booked Thursday into the county jail in Pontiac on a charge of controlled substance/amphetamine. Abraham was 11 in 1997 when he was accused of fatally shooting a stranger in Pontiac. He was convicted in 1999 at age 13. He was released from state supervision in 2007, but his run-ins with the law have continued.

FLINT, Mich. (AP) — Jaden Smith’s foundation and a church are working to bring cleaner water to Flint, Michigan. The rapper’s organization and First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church on Friday announced they’ll deploy a mobile water filtration system known as “The Water Box” that reduces lead and other potential contaminants. The 20-year-old’s JUST goods company collaborated with the church to design and engineer the system. Flint has been replacing water lines after lead-tainted water was discovered in 2014.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a man illegally operated a dental practice in the basement of his suburban Detroit home and allegedly used his church to get referrals. Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith says he’s charging the Clinton Township man with being a health professional operating without a license. Smith says authorities “are thankful that someone had the courage to come forward” and report the man. A search found a dentist chair, an X-ray machine, molds for teeth and other items at the home.
