Guatemala to reschedule meeting between Morales and Trump

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — A meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Guatemalan counterpart Jimmy Morales over a potential “safe third country” agreement for asylum seekers has been canceled.

Guatemala’s office of the presidency said in a Sunday statement that the meeting would be rescheduled due to legal appeals aimed at preventing Morales from acceding to Trump’s requests.

It said that the decision was made because the Constitutional Court has not yet ruled on multiple injunctions against Morales and his officials signing off on such a deal.

The meeting had been scheduled for Monday.

Critics have said that the Guatemalan government does not have the resources to help Salvadorans, Hondurans and people from elsewhere who apply for asylum in Guatemala instead of at the U.S. border.
