German rescue ship allowed in Italian waters due to weather

MILAN (AP) — The Italian Coast guard says it has permitted a vessel carrying 47 rescued migrants to enter Italian territorial waters due to bad weather conditions.

The German aid group Sea-Watch said on Twitter Friday that it has received no response to multiple requests to access a port with the migrants that it rescued off the coast of Libya on Saturday.

Italy and Malta, the closest EU nations, have both refused to allow entry to rescue vessels operated by humanitarian groups in what they say is a bid to discourage smuggler boats from departing Libya by diminishing the prospect of rescue.

The Coast Guard said that Sea-Watch was one to two miles off Siracusa, Sicily, flanked by Coast Guard and Financial Police boats.
