VOLKSWAGEN-FORD

FRANKFURT, Germany _ Volkswagen and Ford say they’re forming a global alliance in which they will together develop commercial vans and medium-sized pickups while exploring broader cooperation on battery-powered and autonomous vehicles. Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess and Ford CEO Jim Hackett said in a statement Tuesday that the first jointly developed vehicles could hit the market as early as 2022 and that the linkup would offer efficiencies that would mean stronger profits starting 2023. —GARAGE DEATH: Authorities say a man found dead with severe burns inside a garage in suburban Detroit apparently was electrocuted while trying to create an artwork.

—SLEEPING BEAR DUNES-SHUTDOWN: Officials say basic public services will be restored at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in the coming days, even as the partial government shutdown continues.

—BARN FIRE: Authorities say seven horses died in a weekend barn fire at a farm in southeastern Michigan.

—PET CEMETERY FUTURE: A judge has granted a temporary restraining order to prevent the sale of a shuttered Michigan pet cemetery that houses remains of an estimated 74,000 animals.

—JUDGE RESIGNS: A Detroit-area judge who was criticized last year for her attendance says she’s resigning after 21 years on the bench.

The Cavaliers host No. 9 Virginia Tech then travel to top-ranked Duke in a two-game set that will headline the week’s schedule for AP Top 25 teams. The Blue Devils are coming off a home loss to Syracuse that included the loss of freshman point guard Tre Jones to a shoulder injury that will keep him out indefinitely.
