Gardens & FlowersSomething all of us should think about when we looking at our environment. Bee's are an insect we are dependant on for our well being. Without them plants don't grow, animals don't eat and neither do we. So take care when spraying for insects and think about what foot prints you leave in the environment.Gardens & FlowersSomething all of us should think about when we looking at our environment. Gardens & FlowersMost hummingbirds have headed south, but a few hardy females are still visiting hummingbird feeders, storing energy for their long trip to warmer climes. Keep your hummingbird feeders full until after several hard frosts with simple "nectar" of 1 part sugar in 4 parts water. Other nectar feeders are swarming our hummer feeders, as well. As this photo [IMG 4803-2.jpg, attached] shows, gentle honey bees are taking advantage of a sugar source not found in nature right now. We made getting the "nectar" easier by inserting a twist of twine into the hummer feeder, so that it wicks up the sugar solution. Gentle honey bees love it, and come every warm day. Apiarists use a similar practice to nourish bees, which is safe and effective at getting them strong for winter. So keep your hummer feeders full, and enjoy our fall visitors! (You're welcome to come out and video these feeders and feeders!)Gardens & FlowersMost hummingbirds have headed south, but a few hardy females are still visiting hummingbird feeders, storing energy for their long trip to warmer climes.
