Michele Hoitenga (R)

Background:

Michigan Hoitenga is a Republican seeking reelection to represent District 102 in the Michigan House of Representatives. She assumed office in 2017. She serves on the Communications and Technology Committee, Regulatory Reform Committee, Insurance Committee, and the Families, Children and Seniors Committee.

Hoitenga grew up in Buckley, and graduated from Baker College. She lives in Manton with her husband Phillip and two children.

Hoitenga was appointed vice chair of the Wexford County Republican Party and served as mayor of Manton. She is the co-owner of PhD Consulting. To learn more, check out her campaign website.

HB 4019: Liquor; licenses; provision that prohibits a licensee from allowing a person less than 18 years of age to sell or serve alcoholic liquor; modify. Amends sec. 707 of 1998 PA 58 (MCL 436.1707).

HB 4020: Weapons; other; purchase and possession of stun guns; allow for individuals over age 21.

HB 4021: A bill to amend 1927 PA 372, entitled “An act to regulate and license the selling, purchasing, possessing, and carrying of certain firearms, gas ejecting devices, and electro-muscular disruption devices; to prohibit the buying, selling, or carrying of certain firearms, gas ejecting devices, and electro-muscular disruption devices without a license or other authorization; to provide for the forfeiture of firearms and electro-muscular disruption devices under certain circumstances; to provide for penalties and remedies; to provide immunity from civil liability under certain circumstances; to prescribe the powers and duties of certain state and local agencies; to prohibit certain conduct against individuals who apply for or receive a license to carry a concealed pistol; to make appropriations; to prescribe certain conditions for the appropriations; and to repeal all acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this act,” by amending sections 5b, 5c, 5d, 5e, and 5l (MCL 28.425b, 28.425c, 28.425d, 28.425e, and 28.425l), sections 5b and 5l as amended by 2017 PA 95 and sections 5c, 5d, and 5e as amended by 2015 PA 3; and to repeal acts and parts of acts.

Issues:

Second Amendment: “As a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) holder, Life Member of the National Rifle Association, and Director of the Wexford County Women on Target, I understand the importance of protecting ourselves and our families from those who wish to do us harm.” Hoitenga pledges to protect Second Amendment rights and supports constitutional carry.

Businesses and Taxes: “Taxes by their very nature reduce a citizen’s freedom.” Hoitenga opposes the use of taxes to redistribute income or fund “ineffective” programs, though she does not specify which programs she believes are ineffective.
