Family loses everything in Manton fire

UPDATE 9/29/23 6:15 p.m.

MANTON — The Manton Fire Department said they got the call around 6 p.m. Thursday to a home in the 600 block of Michigan Avenue.

Greg Bock, a Lieutenant with Salvation Army that services Wexford, Missaukee, and Kalkaska Counties, said they are helping the family of four; a single mom and her three children between the ages of 11 and 17, that lived at the home and have lost everything.

Bock said the family was not home at the time but returned to see their home in flames.

“Can you imagine going to have a good evening swimming at the beach to come back to having nothing left? And that’s what happened to this family. This one is going to need a lot of assistance for probably quite a while. I know there are some families that had house fires even at the end of last year that I think are still housed in hotels. So, this might be a long process,” said Bock.

The Salvation Army said several Manton businesses, including Cast Iron Kitchen and Love Inc., Foster’s Closet in Cadillac, and a local hotel have stepped up to help the family deal with the devastating loss.

Manton Fire Department is still investigating the cause. The home next door was also damaged by the fire.
