Manistee Addresses Lack of Affordable Housing in the Area

The city of Manistee’s zoning commission is expected to vote on a change that could make finding housing in the area little easier.

The amendment would make it simpler for multi-family housing to be built in more residential areas, without so many barriers. Right now, a public hearing is needed for special land use requests, which needs approval to turn a single family home into a multi-family home.

The planner for the city and county of Manistee says administrative approval would be all that’s required.

“Housing is definitely a problem. You know, we’re not just seeing it in this area. We’re seeing it all across Michigan and across the country with our housing stock and such. So and I know myself personally, I moved to this area just about two years ago now, and it was not the easiest thing trying to find a house,” said Katie Mehl.

Changes would also fast track some of the steps needed to build more housing
