Cheboygan Area Schools Closed for Shooting Threat

Cheboygan Area Schools were canceled on Monday due to a threat of gun violence.

The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office says the School Resource Officer was texted a photo at 5:45 a.m. of a person with a rifle, warning people not to go to school.

The superintendent closed schools for the day, and deputies say they had a 16-year-old suspect in custody by 9 a.m.

They say the teen did not plan to carry out the threat, but there will be emergency juvenile court proceedings.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking parents and guardians to remind students about the consequences of making threats, and to monitor online activity.

Cheboygan Area Schools will reopen on Tuesday.
