Health in Focus: Lumbar Stenosis

Board-certified neurosurgeon Dr. Jay Jagannathan, with Jagannathan Neurosurgery, joined us today to talk about Lumbar Stenosis.

Lumbar Stenosis is a compression of nerves caused by arthritis, disk bulges or degeneration in the back. Often times, patients will complain of extremity pain and/or back pain that gets worse with walking, but is relieved when they are resting or leaning forward. With Lumbar Stenosis, one nerve or multiple nerves may be compressed.

Symptoms of Lumbar Stenosis can include:

  • Back pain
  • Leg cramping
  • Shooting pain down the legs
  • Weakness
  • Numbness and tingling

Dr. Jay says that treatments for this include:

  • Rest/anti-inflammatories
  • Phsyical therapy
  • Steroid injections
  • Surgery
