Crafting with the Katies: DIY Felt Pumpkin Pie Garland

Now that Halloween is done, we’re ready to jump into our Thanksgiving crafts! This week, we’ll show you how to make a felt pumpkin pie garland, with materials for less than $10.

For this craft, you’ll need:

  • Orange felt
  • Tan or brown felt
  • Sharpie
  • Ruler
  • Hot glue and hot glue gun
  • White pompoms
  • Twine
  • Cardboard for a triangle template

To make your own DIY pumpkin pie garland:

Step one: Make a triangle template for your pie slices. The bottom of our triangles measured about 6 inches across. Then figure out how many slices you can get out of one piece of felt.

Step two: Trace your triangle template onto the orange felt with your Sharpie. For one sheet of felt, we got about 12 pumpkin pie slices.

Step three: Cut the triangles out. You’ll want to cut slightly inside the lines so you don’t have a black outline.

Step four: Set aside your slices and bring out your tan or brown felt. Measure out one inch strips. Remember, each slice will have two strips of tan or brown felt, so make sure you cut double the amount.

Step five: Once you have all your strips of felt cut, start gluing one strip down to the “top” of your pie slice. Cut any extra off the sides of your pie slice.

Step six: When you have your first layer of felt strip glued down, take another strip for the crust. You’ll want to dollop a drop of glue onto your crust, attach, then fold your felt to give it a ripple effect. Make sure the glue has time to dry before proceeding. Cut off the ends of that strip of felt if necessary.

Repeat step five and six until all your pie slices are done.

Step seven: Take your white pompoms and glue them to the center of your pie slices.

Step eight: Cut a long piece of twine for your garland. Depending on the amount of pieces you use or the size of the space, determine how long you need to make your twine length. We made ours about 6 ft long.

Step nine: Glue the back of your pie slices to your twine piece. One line of hot glue should do the trick!

And there you have it! Your very own pumpkin pie slice garland, perfect for hosting Thanksgiving!
