PACE Participants Add Artwork to Northern Michigan Buses

Some area seniors are taking their artwork and hitting the road, but not in the way you might expect.

PACE North is a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly in Traverse City. It features a day center for activities, socialization, meals, and rehab. Participants qualify for assistance in a nursing facility but want to stay in their homes as long as possible.

PACE North recently worked with their elderly participants to create original license plate artwork to display on the front of each of the buses in their fleet.

“We thought what a great idea to get the participants involved in showing some ownership and participating and designing some artwork we could put on the bus, and represent PACE and represent our participants,” says PACE North Transportation Coordinator Bob Paulus.

“We have some really talented people that do artwork here. And we have some people that are really challenged with limited ability to use their hands and their arms,” he says. He has a favorite design picked out, and says, “It tells a different story. It tells a story of effort put forth by someone who really is challenged physically.”

Paulus says he hopes to repeat the project in the future. “The one thing I got out of this project was how important recreational therapy is. It’s something you don’t think about. But when you see the results of the excitement that we have with the participants, it tells a story of how important recreational therapy actually is.”

The Artwork is also for sale for $15 each, proceeds will support a fund for non-medical needs for the participants.
