Traverse City is helping with cleanup efforts in the wake of Hurricane Ian by sending a crew from TC Light and Power to Florida.

The utility is sending six linemen and four trucks down to Florida’s west coast, although their exact destination will change depending on the need. The crew left Wednesday morning and they’ll go wherever they’re needed the most.

“They’ll get everyone together and request what they think they need. And it’s kind of difficult on one of these large events to know exactly what’s going to be necessary. But you’ve got to get people headed there,” says TCLP Operations Manager Daren Dixon. “This event is wind and flooding, the wind is what really gets us. It shears poles off, tears wire down. Transformers, all that kind of business. It could be a little bit of everything.”

Dixon adds, “There’s folks on the ground there that try to organize. Saying there’s how many different outages we’re seeing. And what areas get hit worse. At least (our crew members) are already down there or in that vicinity.”

TCLP says for some of the linemen, it’s not their first time volunteering to help with power restoration after a hurricane or natural disaster.
