Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department Deputies Take to the St. Marys River for Training
One local Sheriff’s Department took part of the day to break out a few of their water rescue boats.
The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department in Sault Ste. Marie has several water craft for patrol and rescue, and ten deputies took turns training on the vessels which includes a hovercraft, a fan boat, and a patrol boat.
They maneuvered around on the St. Marys river to get used to the controls, the steering and speed of the vessels.
“Today’s purpose was getting those who have never been on them was to familiarize them with the operation of the equipment,” Justin Fruchey, Sgt. Marine and O.R.V. Division, says. “And then the one’s who have been operating them in the past, just updated training. It’s one of those tasks is that if you don’t use it all the time, you lose it.”
Fruchey says the department hopes to get an additional patrol boat within the next year.
