Hook & Hunting: Maintenance at Maple River State Game Area Underway

A maintenance project is underway in Gratiot County.

Maple River State Game Area units A and B are being worked on, and may impact early goose and teal hunting seasons in the area.

The project includes repairing and strengthening the water retaining structure to help it withstand annual flooding events.

Hunting is still allowed while construction is happening.

“We’re asking people who do frequently hunt in that area, especially during the early goose season and teal season coming up here in September to do some scouting ahead of time,” said —. “Make sure you lay eyes on the area this year before you head out there in the dark first thing opening morning because conditions this year than they’ve been in the past.”

The project is expected to be finished by early September, but water levels in the units may not recover before October waterfowl season because of low water levels in the river.
