Property owners in one Grand Traverse County community could be getting some good news on their insurance bills. Peninsula Township’s newest fire station – opened in 2021 – is improving its Insurance Service Office safety rating.

The fire chief says their last ISO review was two years ago. The new station, with its faster response times, could mean a break with the new insurance rates that take effect September 1. Peninsula Township Fire Chief Fred Gilstorff says, “Putting all that into place has significantly dropped our response times, which is something ISO looks at. And having people up there as well, we’re able to do things quickly and efficiently to bring whatever the situation is under control.”

“Residents will need to check with their insurance companies. Some companies will follow the ISO protection class rating, as far as determining rates for the resident. Some don’t. So they’ll need to call their insurance rep,” the chief says.

The new $1.1 million dollar fire station opened in 2021 and the chief says it’s made the biggest difference for property owners on the north end of Old Mission Peninsula.
