Local emergency agencies in Sault Ste. Marie is doing what they can to be ready for an active shooter situation and not just at schools.
The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie held an active shooter situation on Tuesday.
“It’s more prevalent, and we’ve gotten more interested in making sure we exercise and know what to do,” said Captain Anthony Jones, U.S. Coast Guard and Sector Commander for Sault Ste. Marie.
The mass shooting simulation was at the U.S. Coast Guard Station.
“I think it was smooth, and we’ll find that most things worked well, but we will look for areas we can improve on,” said Captain Jones.
The Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department and the Chippewa County Central Dispatch also participated.
“It’s good to have those exercises to flex those muscles, make sure things are working right, make sure that they’re making the right telephone calls, that they’re making the right connections with the right law enforcement and with law and also with the EMS,” explained Greg Postma, Central Dispatch Director for Chippewa County.
All emergency agencies are coming together to ensure they’re ready for what has become an unfortunate reality.
“As we move through it today and I do a debrief with my crew, I’ll find out exactly where, if any weaknesses are were,” said Postma. “We do know that there are some places in the county that we could probably increase our footprint as far as technology goes, and we’re looking to do that.”
