Sugar Islander II Ferry Back in Service After Almost a Year

After several months in dry dock, the Sugar Islander II Ferry is now back in service.

The ferry funs from the mainland at Rotary Park in Sault Ste. Marie to Sugar Island and back.

The Drummond Islander III took over responsibilities nearly one year ago. The Islander II went into MCM Marine to be repowered, repainted and for a complete five year required check-up at a cost of more than $1 million.

A person who lives on the island was the first one on the reconditioned ferry just before 10 a.m. Monday.

“We have just been waiting and waiting, and we asked the guys when it would be back and they said they don’t know,” Pat Newhouse, Sugar Island resident said. “We are thrilled to have it back. It’s Christmas in August. It’s great, it looks wonderful! I could do a handstand if I could do a handstand.”

The Sugar Island Volunteer Fire Department even welcomed the ferry back on its first run in a year.
