Hook & Hunting: Father and Son Start Competitive Fishing Team for Clare High School

In 2019, more than 50 kids showed up to an informational meeting about a possible fishing team at Clare High School.

The pandemic then hit and canceled the plans, but now, a father and son duo are making sure it happens.

Fishing has always been a passion for Mark McNally and his son.

“I hope he sees me as a positive role model, someone they can look at,” said Mark McNally, President and Coach of Clare HS Fishing Team. “When I was a kid, my parents were really involved in my activities, and that’s what I hope for when my kids grow up.”

Now, the duo is using their love for fishing to start the Clare High School fishing team.

“I want to make new friends that would be able to understand how fishing can help them, how fun fishing can be, and also the skills that it can teach us,” said Conner McNally Freshman at Clare High School.

“It’s serving the community in a way that gives the kids a positive experience and the opportunity to be able to do something like this hopefully be able to an influence their life decisions and make them better people,” explained Mark McNally.

The season kicks off in May, but fundraising is underway because it’s a club sport, so it’s not funded through the school.

“I want to get our name up there on the board. That would definitely be cool,” said Conner McNally. “I also want to influence the community and show people, not physical sports can be the top dogs too.”

Volunteers are needed to help kids reel in their victories too.

“In high school rules, high school students aren’t allowed to drive the boat. You have people that volunteer their boats and volunteer as a boat captain to operate their boat and take two kids out fishing during tournaments,” explained Mark McNally.
