Bicyclists in Traverse City hit the trails Friday for TART Trails 21st annual Tour de TART fundraiser.
“We did have to pivot, change things for the past two year. So, this is our first year back as a full event,” TART Trails Event Coordinator, Janna Goethel explains. “Tour de TART really just sets us in a great direction for the rest of the summer. It celebrates all things that we love in Northern Michigan.”
Over 500 bicyclists took on the Tour de TART Friday evening for TART Trails largest fundraiser of the year.
“We hope to raise $20,000. [It’s] a great goal for us and helps us build new trails, maintain our existing trails and advocate for additional trail use in the area,” Goethel says.
Riders started at Darrow Park in Traverse City and rode 17-miles all the way up to North Park in Suttons Bay, but there were some stops along the way. The stops featured food and beverage from local businesses. They had cherries, Northern Michigan wine, beer and soda — plus some ice cream as well.
And along with two food and drink stops, riders were also treated to a luau put on by Brick Wheels at the Fouch Trailhead.
“In the Tour de TART we’re usually the first food stop and we’ve always been a Hawaiian or a luau kind of thing,” Brick Wheels’ Sales Manager, Matthew Mulligan, states. “We’ve been in it pretty much since the original. It’s another way to give back to the community.”
One of this evenings riders, Herb Lemcool, says it’s something he does every year as a way to celebrate his birthday.
“I tell you what it is fantastic. We are so blessed to have such a great trail. And the people are enjoying the heck out of it,” Herb says.
Tour de TART wrapped up tonight at North Park with dinner, music and beverages. Participants fortunately didn’t have to ride the whole way back after eating all that food as they got rides back to town.
