Greenville Man Drowns in Race Lake in Fairplain Township

A 73-year-old Greenville man drowned on July 3 in Race Lake in Fairplain Township, according to the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office.

The Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call around 7:53 p.m. on July 3 of an unoccupied boat floating in Race Lake, as well as a vehicle and trailer parked near the lake. According to the sheriff’s office, the caller attempted to communicate with anyone around the boat but was unsuccessful.

The Belding Fire Department was called in and assisted by providing an inflatable boat, allowing the sheriff department’s dive team to reach the unoccupied boat. The boat was approximately 100 yards from the boat launch.

The dive team found the man approximately 30 yards from the boat in six feet of water. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office believes the man accidently fell from his fishing boat and that no foul play is suspected.
