Consumers Energy is apologizing to folks in Roscommon County after back to back days with power outages.

Power went out early Wednesday afternoon then again in the same area on Thursday. So, Consumers is trying to make up for the issues with ice cream. Consumers Energy Northeast Michigan community Affairs Manager Rich Castle says they want to give back to the community.

“Obviously it’s the hottest couple of days of the year and we’ve had a couple outages and we just want to make sure we’re giving back to our customers,” Castle states.

The power outage Wednesday was caused due to an equipment issue at the Higgins Substation while workers were making improvements. The other outage Thursday was due to damage  from wind gusts of over 60mph. Over 28,000 people went without power Thursday.

“We care about our customers. We know that the hot temperatures and the power outages have not been ideal for seniors, pets and for everyone in general,” Castle insists. “So, a little bit of ice cream helps cool them off a little bit, but more importantly we just want to give back to our customers and let them know we do care.”

Consumers had free ice cream and representatives on-site for folks in both Houghton Lake and Roscommon. They say they are currently working on improvements in Roscommon County. They say they hope the improvements help keep the lights on.

“We’re doing a lot of reliability training here in Roscommon County so these outage we’ve had, we’re hoping those will be less in the future,” Castle explains. “So, the projects are designed to add capacity, make the system more reliable. And they’re really necessary to serve the customers here in Roscommon County, but also serve the future growth of the community as well.”
